What Does Silicone do to Your Hair?
For most of us, the ultimate good hair day would include silky, shiny, healthy looking locks.
No frizz, plenty of body and bounce and not a split end in sight. There are endless amounts of hair products on the market to help us make these dreams a reality, but working out which ones are actually beneficial, and are not damaging our hair in the long run can be really tricky!
Choosing the right products is key, and in the case of hair, sometimes less is more. By putting product after product in our hair, we are often coating the hair and making it harder for essential nutrients and moisture to reach the hair shaft. We end up with build up that is hard to remove, adding weight to our hair which leaves it looking limp and flat. Making sure you know exactly what ingredients are in your hair products is vital
One of the most commonly used ingredients in hair products is Silicone. Silicone creates a shine and adds a slippery feeling to your hair. It can help smooth and straighten hair, and also gives it a soft, conditioned feel. Sounds great right? In actual fact Silicone, a cheap polymer made by a similar process to that of plastic and rubber, is a man-made chemical used as a sealant against water and air. It gives your hair the illusion of shine, but it’s an artificial shine created by the silicone that is coating your hair. A real, healthy shine comes from well-nourished and hydrated hair that is being treated from the inside out. Silicone usually goes by names that end in “cone” such as Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, Stearyl Dimethicone or Cyclomethicone. Commonly found in conditioner, but also shampoo and other hair styling products, this cheap, synthetic ingredient can do more damage than good.

Application
